Does your car have a green license plate?

Important changes from 1 December 2026

If you drive a plug-in hybrid or a range-extended externally rechargeable hybrid, you will need to replace your green license plate.

But does the change affect you?

Find out what is changing, when you need to replace your plate and what to keep in mind.

Who is affected?

The withdrawal of green license plates affects two vehicle categories:

5P

plug-in hybrid vehicles

5N

range-extended, externally rechargeable hybrid vehicles

If you own one of these vehicles, you must replace its current green license plate by 30 November 2026 at the latest.

If you have a fully electric car, no action is needed

The change does not affect fully electric vehicles. They can continue to use green license plates.

When do you need to replace it?

30 November 2026

This is the final deadline.

From 1 December 2026, affected vehicles in categories 5P and 5N may no longer be used on public roads with green license plates.

The plate replacement is not automatic: the vehicle owner must arrange it.

Do not leave the process until the last minute. According to the ministry, increased demand and plate production times may cause delays.

Where can you arrange it?

You can arrange the replacement at a Hungarian government service centre acting as the road traffic administration authority. You can choose between two options.

01

Request a new license plate

You will receive a new letter and number combination.

Fee

HUF 18,060

The fee includes:

  • the new license plate
  • the new vehicle registration certificate
  • the registration sticker for the windscreen

This option can be completed in a single visit.

02

Keep your current plate characters

You can keep the existing letter and number combination, but the new plate will have a white background.

Fee

HUF 16,605

The process:

  • order the replacement plate in person
  • return to collect it within two weeks

Replacing the vehicle registration certificate is not mandatory; the change may be recorded in the official notes section.

What should you bring?

You will need the following for the administration process:

  • identity card
  • vehicle registration certificate
  • current license plate
  • proof of ownership

Got a new license plate? There is one more important task

Do not forget your motorway e-vignette.

If the car receives a new plate number, the motorway e-vignette must also be updated. According to the official information from NÚSZ, the administration fee is HUF 1,470.

You should also notify:

  • your insurer
  • the leasing company for a company car
  • your employer

What happens if you miss the deadline?

From 1 December 2026, affected vehicles in categories 5P and 5N may no longer legally use green license plates.

If this is identified during a roadside inspection, the vehicle may be temporarily taken off the road until the plate is replaced or the vehicle is re-registered.

Do not leave it until the last minute

If you are affected, it is worth starting the process in good time.

30 November 2026 is the deadline.
